Fantasia's Frigate is a 3D horror puzzle game with a branching narrative that was prototyped at the beginning of my junior year and became a complete game in the second half of my junior year. The team consisted of 6 people, with my role being Main Level Designer and Co-Game Designer.
Concept:
I began discussing ideas for the map with my teammates and came to a consensus that utilizing the fantasy and horror aspects of our game, the level would incorporate minimal lighting, close walls, and expansive areas to work with various puzzles.
Blockout:
Once the map outline was complete, I began experimenting with the lighting in the game to find a balance of a horror feeling while not being impossible to explore. I used smaller lamps that would flicker for that balance.
Final:
After receiving feedback from playtests that the map was too easy to get lost in, I adjusted the map size and worked closely with the team's artist to add signs throughout the map to help players while keeping a consistent theme.
